TDI Cavern Diver – Introduction to Overhead Environment Diving

The TDI Cavern Diver Course introduces divers to the exciting world of cavern diving. Cavern diving takes place in overhead environments where natural light from the entrance is always visible and divers remain within a safe distance of the exit.

This course teaches divers the fundamental skills required for diving in cavern environments while maintaining strict safety procedures. Students will learn proper guideline use, buoyancy control, and specialized dive planning techniques needed for safe cavern exploration.

Cavern diving requires strong control, discipline, and situational awareness. During training, divers will develop precise buoyancy, trim, and propulsion skills while learning how to safely navigate overhead environments.

The TDI Cavern Diver course is often the first step toward advanced cave diving training such as Intro to Cave Diver and Full Cave Diver programs.

Course Schedule

Typical course duration: 2–3 days

Training includes:

• Academic learning sessions

Students will practice navigation techniques and cavern safety procedures under instructor supervision.

Training Standards

Minimum Age

18 years old (15 with parental consent)

Prerequisites

• Open Water Diver certification or equivalent

• Minimum 25 logged dives 

These prerequisites ensure divers have adequate experience before entering overhead environments.
